Happy Birthday! You are forty-one today. I think it makes us both feel old. I wanted to take this opportunity to say 'thanks.'
Thank you for Romeo + Juliet. I mean, there's nothing as perfect as Leo in that movie, right? And thank you for Titanic. Thank you for gradually transitioning to serious, well-made, adult movies rather than falling into obscurity or getting a drug addiction or resorting to Lifetime movies, like most young stars. Thank you for being compassionate and caring about the environment. It's easier to get behind than Clooney's marriage and tequila company. And also makes it easier to overlook the revolving door of blonde models.
Thanks for The Departed and parts of Inception and Wolf of Wall Street. You should have won the Oscar for Django Unchained! Hell, anyone from that movie besides Christoph Waltz - his Django character was a pale imitation of Inglorious Basterds' Hans Landa. And sorry for all the internet memes - I really think this year is your year! The Revenant trailers look great! The cinematography alone...
Mostly, thanks for continuing to make good, sometimes just okay (looking at you, J. Edgar), movies. You should let your hair down more often - Catch Me if You Can was so fun! But keep up with the environment stuff. Don't let those internet dudes obsessed with the lack of Oscar get you down.
I'm of the generation that came of age with R + J and Titanic. I've seen both more times than I want to admit. I'm sure there is an entire generation of men that want to hate you, but begrudgingly admit to your talent and looks.
Happy Birthday. Keep up the good work. I'll be in your corner until you pull a Mel Gibson or join Scientology.
Love, almost always,
